Common Core Learning Standards

In January 2011, the New York State Board of Regents adopted
the
NYS P-12 Common
Core State Standards
(CCLS).
Schools in
New York State have been charged with beginning to
implement the CCLS during the 2011-2012 academic year with
full implementation expected in September 2012.

Six
Shifts in ELA:
The
Common Core Learning Standards have been carefully crafted
to ensure that students are college and career ready upon
graduation from high school. In order to ensure that
our instruction is designed to meet those goals, the authors
of the standards have identified six instructional shifts
needed to effectively implement the standards:
1.
Balancing Informational & Literary Texts
2.
6-12
Knowledge in the Disciplines
3.
Staircase of Text Complexity
4.
Text-based Answers
5.
Writing
from Sources
6.
Academic
Vocabulary
Six
Shifts in Math:
1.
Focus
2.
Coherence
3.
Fluency
4.
Deep
Understanding
5.
Application
6.
Dual
Intensity
Training for administrators and teachers will occur
throughout the 2011-2012 school year, to ensure that all
parties are adequately prepared to implement the
standards with confidence and
fidelity.

At this site, the main
authors of the common core math standards explain in detail
the standards using blogs, "progression" documents, etc.
Be sure to look on the "tools" page. Additional
resources written by the authors of the CCS will appear
here. This site updates frequently.
illustrativemathematics.org
An excellent tool for looking at the math CCS from several
angles (pardon the pun) such as grade level, vertical
domain, clusters of standards, etc. Three very
important pages in this site illustrate the
Eight Mathematical
Practice Standards ,
the
K-8 Content
Standards, and the
High School
Content Standards.
This site also plans to be populated with sample tasks to
illustrate the standards.
Be sure to spend some time clicking the diagrams and text to
expand the standards and examine in various ways.
