Northwood Elementary LEGO Team competes
in robotics tournament; wins Resear ch
Quality award
Northwood Elementary School students'
FIRST LEGO League Team #4178 made it to the
Championship Tournament at the University of Rochester on
Dec. 6 by winning a Research Quality award at the Qualifying
tournament at Churchville-Chili November 21 according to
REACH teacher Ed Donnelly. "The championship was an
awesome event and the teamwork was excellent," Mr. Donnelly
said.
Teams from around Monroe County tested
robots that they designed and built out of LEGO pieces which
were required to perform a variety of tasks such as
navigating to difficult-to-access places and retrieving
objects in a 4-by-8-foot arena with a series of obstacles.
Students were also asked to give a presentation on the
year's theme, transportation.
Teams were asked to pick a real-world
transportation challenge, research it, and draw up a poster,
skit, or other demonstration dealing with the issues
involved. Teams work on both engineering and communication
skills. For more information, and videos from previous
