Hilton High School ranks in US News &
World Report 2012 list of 'Top Schools'
Thirteen area high schools are
among the nation’s best, according to
U.S. News and World Report’s 2012 edition of the
Nation’s Best High Schools, released May 8,
2012. Topping the local list is
Greece Odyssey Academy, ranked as the nation’s
75th best high school.
Pittsford Mendon High School is ranked 82nd;
Pittsford Sutherland High School is 116th; and
Brighton High School is listed as 180th.
"We are all very proud at Hilton High School to
be named on this prestigious list," Hilton High School
Principal Brian Bartalo said. "The hard work done by
students and staff is reflected in this national
recognition. We plan to continue to be diligent about
ensuring that all our students at Hilton HS are challenging
themselves with rigorous and relevant work to make them
college and career ready and prepared with 21st Century
skills."
To determine the 2012 rankings, U.S.
News and World Report and American Institutes for Research
analyzed data from more than 22,000 public high schools
across the country. Schools were first analyzed at a state
level for how well their students perform on state
assessments, then were ranked nationally based on how well
the schools prepare students for college-level work,
according to U.S. News and World Report. Other local schools
that made the list include
Bloomfield High School, ranked at 278;
Honeoye Falls-Lima High School, ranked at 386;
Irondequoit High School, ranked at 541;
Webster Thomas High School, ranked at 687;
Churchville-Chili Senior High School ranked at 865;
Canandaigua Academy, ranked at 1,025; Rochester’s
School of the Arts, at 1,222;
Brockport High School, ranked at 1,236;
Hilton High School at 1,341;
Gates Chili High School, ranked at 1,542. In 2012
Hilton High School ranked 171st within New York. Students
have the opportunity to take Advanced Placement® and IB
coursework and exams. The AP® participation rate at Hilton
High School is 43 percent.
2010 Results:
For the sixth year in a row, in 2010 Hilton High School was
recognized by Newsweek magazine in its annual
“America’s Top High Schools” issue. The list ranks the top 1,200 U.S.
high schools, which represents less than 6% of all high
schools in the country. Each year, Newsweek
magazine picks the best high schools in the country based on
how hard school staffs work to challenge students with
advanced-placement college-level courses and tests. Just
over 1,600 schools—only 6 percent of all the public schools
in the U.S.—made the list.
In 2010 Hilton High School ranked
1,208; in 2009 Hilton High School ranked 1,030; in 2008
HHS ranked 933, the first time that Hilton HS is in the top
1,000 [previous years’ scores include 1,188, 1,074, and
1,036]. "We’re very proud at Hilton High School of this
annual recognition from Newsweek," said Principal Bartalo.
"We have hard working students and staff to thank for being
on this list. We will continue to strive to have more
students in the future challenge themselves with rigorous
courses at our school to better prepare for their
post-secondary pursuits." The Newsweek rankings are
based on a formula that divides the number of AP, IB and
Cambridge exams given at each school by that school's number
of graduating seniors.
