Learning Support Services/Special Education

Learning Support Services/Special Education is responsible for the evaluation, placement and service provision of and for students with disabilities as defined by the Part 200 of the Commissioner's Regulations and IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act) which mandates a free and appropriate education in the least restrictive environment.

Learning Support Services/Special Education provides:

  • Extended school year programs

  • Health-related services

  • Committee on Special Education (CSE) evaluations and services for school-age students

  • Occupational therapy

  • Physical therapy

  • Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports (PBIS)

  • Committee on Preschool Special Education (CPSE) evaluations and services

  • Psychological services

  • School counselor services

  • Social worker services

  • Speech and language services

  • Student registration

Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)

A parent, guardian, or student over the age of 18 has access to the school records according to federal law, Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA). Any records maintained by a school district as part of the official record are available for review by the parent or the student after age 18. The law also controls sharing of pupil records with third party individuals or agencies.
