Distraction Free Learning in the Hilton Schools
Dear Hilton Families,
Throughout the month of August, many families take this time to ease back into school-year routines—reestablishing healthy sleep habits, structured schedules, and especially important this fall, considering screen time reduction as part of that transition. In response to Governor Kathy Hochul’s statewide initiative to create distraction-free learning environments, New York schools will implement a 'bell-to-bell' restriction on smartphone use starting in the 2025–2026 school year. With cell phone use not permitted during the school day, helping children gradually adjust to less screen time can support a smoother and more comfortable return to school.
Students who continue to spend long hours on their devices may find it more challenging to adapt to a full school day without them. Sudden changes in screen habits can sometimes lead to stress, difficulty concentrating, and irritability. A gradual shift over the next few weeks can help ease this transition and set students up for success.
Here are some strategies that may support your family in making this adjustment:
Set screen time limits
Turn off notifications
Establish tech-free zones
Encourage hobbies as alternatives to screen time
Remove time-wasting apps
Track usage together (make it a fun family challenge!)
Store and charge devices in a central location outside of bedrooms
Create a communication plan for the family when texting during the day is unavailable
Creating a family device and media plan that fits your household’s needs can be a proactive way to support your child’s well-being and academic success.
Below are some helpful resources that offer more detailed guidance and support for families navigating this transition.
We look forward to welcoming the students back this fall and hope you all enjoy the remaining days of summer!
Sincerely,
The Hilton Central School District Leadership Team
